Ir you're thinking 305 to save gas, forget it. Get a 350. It will be MUCH more satisfying, and will use about the same amount of gas.

A 4.3 is a good motor, and will respond well to performance mods. OR you can buy a new crate high performance 4.3 that will be a bolt in replacement.

Oh gosh forget the 305. You will gain 40 hp. at best. If the 305's brand new or blue printed. A 327 or a 350 makes more sense. The 305 is a thin-wall cast motor you can't cut the heads for more compression or swap heads with any other small block. The valves would hit the block. Getting back to your question, the trans is a bolt on. The motor is a bolt in. Many changes will be needed in front of the motor. The fan shroud will need to be extencively altered. I't probably be best to completely remove the temp. controlled fan and bracket an electric fan at the rear side of the radiator.

The mechanics will fit but you Will have problems with the computer controls unless you transfer all the electrical. Best bet would be to sell and buy one with engine you want, May be less time consuming and less costly. Plus you may not pass air pollution control test requirements in your state due to engine swap,.Need to check first.
