Because it is boring as hell and a waste of time. No it doesn't help anything to get upset, but people do a lot of things that go against themselves.

People are grumpy in line, in their cars, at work, at school...We notice how grumpy they are because they are in close proximity to us.
You're right, being calm and patient does make the situation less stressful but some people feel their time is too valuable to be waiting in line. That's life!

A tendency to be impatient is considered a major personality flaw. People who suffer from severe impatience are often considered to be arrogant, insensitive, and overbearing. Impatience can cause a person to cut others off mid-sentence and to make what appear to be uninformed, quick judgements. Impatience can lead the impatient person to snap at others in response to questions or requests. Impatience is considered to be a career stopper for many major corporations. Impatient people are not considered to be good managers or leaders for a company. Many factors can lead a person down the road to impatience. One of the biggest causes is stress. The more stress a person feels, the more likely they will be to react impatiently to additional requests for time.
Impatient people generally know that they suffer from impatience. Some people are lucky enough to only suffer from impatience when their impatience triggers have been pulled. For these people, controlling their impatience depends on learning what their impatience triggers are and learning to recognize the signals that patience is about to be lost. For people with chronic impatience, more intense therapy and retraining may be necessary.

As Americans we are overwhelmed with work and requirements society has forced or tricked us into when we just want peace and rest. The result is that when we cannot get tasks completed quickly, or think the poor cash register girl is incompetent, we resort to anger and frustration. It is the same way our own employers, family members and customers react to us when they have to wait on us. It is a problem that will only worsen without a major change in American Society

Because everyone is in a rush these days and want to do what they have to as quickly as possible. No one wants to slow down and take their time - it almost seems that if you did slow down you would be left behind. Another point in hand why are there always 10 cash register lines and only 2 cashiers? More cashiers shorter lines and wait times...

Because it's frusturating to watch the people ahead of you do stupid stuff that wastes your time. And it's boring and people don't like to be bored. That's what makes me grumpy in lines!

people complain because voicing frustration lessens the emotional load. i know it increases someoen else´s frustration to have to hear that. but just ignore it, and stay calm if thats your thing.
