Unique:
My first book I paid good money to an editor to check, proofread my manuscript. When I read the proofread pages I noticed that I found mistakes, (Many) that they missed. I then took my manuscript to my niece, freshly graduated from high school as an "A" student. She did a far better job and would except no payment. The reading of my book was rewarding enough for her. (Her statement to me.) My second book I done much better on my own but again took it to her. In both books she found not only gramar and spelling mistakes but places were the first of a sentence should be at the end of the sentance? Anyhow I did not take it to be proof read by a (Professional) It is on the shelves now!
Hope this is of some help to you.

I do not know the going rate for only an editor, but I do know that a proofreader who can offer editing suggestions goes for about $1 per page.

Go to any university that has an English lit program find a Phd in English and they will do it for you for a reasonable rate Provided they are not in an exam week. My wife is a Phd in English lit and she does this on the side. A lot of them don't do it for the money but for the love of the art. Hope you find the right one.

Any legitimate, experienced editor/proof reader will charge you plenty. And you don't advertise here for that service. Violation. You sound like a total amateur and if you have little money, you will attract little service. The poster directly below is living in a fantasy world. No Ph.D (chuckle, chuckle, guffaw) is going to help you edit your book, especially for compensation which amounts to next to nothing. Some people (especially the pre-teen and teen set) are living in fantasy land. He says his wife has her Ph.D and does this on the side. She must have a lot of time on her hands and likes volunteerism. Lots of luck!

Is there some reason why you can't do it yourself? A proof reader is going to check for errors. An editor will assist with the editorial process.
