I am using both Windows XP and Windows Me, I have 2 HDDs (Maxtor 40 GB each) and they are fat32
Here is the story: after I forced the computer to restart but pressing the button located on the case I found that the master HDD doesn’t boot and I get some thing on the black screen like: ( master HDD failure) , so I switched my salve HDD to be primary in order to be able to boot and install a new windows, but I got this message: (SLAVE failure , press F2 to continue) so it is clear that the first HDD has a problem but I still don’t know what it is.
A got the same result even after installing the damaged disk on another computer.
I decided to remove the damaged one and install windows on the other HDD to be at least able to boot and use windows. the thing is it can be regcognised by the BIOS but not in windows so i dont have access to use data recovery program (the problem is geting access not data lose) in DOS i dont get folders, i only see files in C but not subfolders or any foldrs

It sounds like your hard drive has a significant number of bad sectors. If the data on the drive has any value to you, I suggest getting it looked at by a professional data recovery service. Each time you power on the drive, you might be causing more damage.

If the data has no value and you just want to see if you can do it, you might want to try a program called R-Studio. Just be prepared that it could take a day or two to get the data off the drive.

Good luck!

Try using a Knoppix LiveCD to access your data

http://www.knoppix.org/

Just burn and boot from it.

If you can't see the data on both your drives from there, then you've got a serious hardware error.

Try OnTrack data recovery:
