This is actually pretty easy. Get some baking soda and mix two tablespoons to a 1/4 cup of water, pour the WHOLE mess on the carpet spot. Let it soak a minute, and then pour some vinegar over it and let it bubble.

If you have a steam cleaner, use that to remove the leftover. Otherwise, just blot it up with a towel. After it dries, vaccuum the residue up from the baking powder.

No more stain.

Old? how old? IF you moved into a home with this problem already the best bet is to just replace the carpeting. Most likely the people before never did the proper care with cleaning up the problems and the stains are set. You arent going to get the stain or the smell out. If its your pet and its old then you let it sit to long and you'll kind have to live with it... like permenant marker that kids love to write on walls with. You can try a stain remover but it depends on how old, if its a urine stain, or a poop stain. Poop stains are usually never removed. Urine stains can come out with a vinegar based cleaner. If you have white carpets you could use some bleach but think about the padding underneath and the floor underneath that. Its going to get moldy and smelly anyway. Time to think of some remodeling.

basically take some baking soda, mixture it with an particularly small quantity of vinegar to make a paste, and then placed it on the carpet with an previous toothbrush. enable it to dry, then vacuum. If the stain is particularly bumped off or lightened up, repeat returned. Or small quantity of Swarfega or WD-40. nicely worth attempting out an particularly small quantity of those issues to work out what works ultimate. Have additionally heard of the brown paper and iron technique.
