These days more people seem to be going to jail and prison. Do you think they will still be around in 100 years and people will be surprised that people used to be locked up in the past.

I've been in jail and am probably going back but I don't understand why people are sent to jail so much instead of other punishments like community service or fines. It just seems a waste of people's lives and money.

Yes because the human nature will not change for the best.

You do not give details, probably because it sounds like you have not received a conviction or sentence on your recidivism.

Most people here seem concerned about non violent crime, but you
know what happens to cell thieves! Consider the feeling of violation one feels when one discovers ones residence has been broken into. If it wasn't for the law, there would be many more felons injured or worse, by retribution and vigilante justice, consider yourself lucky you are in the care of peace officers.

I agree there is a tendency to put too many low risk criminals in Jail (gaol) in the US. E.G. Marijuana possession, prostitution, 3rd strike outs. But the high risk rollers like big business fraudsters deserve to be there as they cost many big money losses through their greed. They played with fire and got burned.
"If you can't do the time, don't do the crime."

I think some form of incarceration e.g. electronic, will be in existence in 100 years.

If crime is the oldest profession then Jail Guards (sorry "correctional officers") are the second oldest profession.

Do yourself a favour, change your attitude and thinking or get serious counselling and try listening and acting pro-socially (normal).

I think they will be, and i think they will be facing much the same problems as they do now. Overcrowding will be even more of an issue with the larger population 100years from now, combined with a lack of morals in society. Think about it, the social morals of all are declining generation after generation, and i think alot of its to do with the fact that much less people believe in religion. I read somewhere that 3/4 of under 25's in the UK have a criminal record. Thats not just alarming, but dispicible. How is the law so hard to follow? THATS why we are over crowded plus that we are letting just about any illegal immigrant stay in the uk.

I cant see the prison situation getting any better, whether in one year or one hundred years unless we bring back the death penalty. I know we cant because we are bound by the hippys in europe, but its the only way to control our prison population without compromising the law. It would benefit all. Not only would the cells be freed, but society wouldnt be paying to maintain those that have wronged them.

Or maybe we should allow more creative sentences, like castration for rapists. Yea yea breach of human rights etc but liberalism will be the fall of control and order. Whilst I think that in law things like that are extreme and unreasonable, it would certainly drive down the number of offenders; Come on, whats going to deter you more? Going to prison, with a tv in your room, and a criminal record, or having your wee wee chopped off and a criminal record?!!! It would never be allowed by any institution, but its an idea!

Maybe you have your own answer, you were in jail but expect to be going back. This suggests that the experience of jail time was not bad enough so that you'd want to avoid it in the future. It also suggests that the jail's reformation process was ineffective or non-existent. Given that, would community service or a fine caused you to change your ways or stop doing what you expect to be returned to jail for? I'd suggest that sentences have, in addition to jail time, intensive education/re-education, ethics training, minimal facilities (only what is necessary to survive) and hard labour.

I think that some prisoners should be given hard labour some should be made do national service and others be made to make the cheap items that we import. Then they could earn points to get an early release and allot would have a trade to come out with.So I ve been told Its like a hotel in prison so what punishment is that

You are a self confessed serial offender with no concept of how your crimes ruin other peoples lives. Your other options are easy ways out for the likes of you so you can scive off the work you are supposed to do. There will always be prisons as long as there are people like you but perhaps one day they will be less comfortable so you will not want to go back.At present there is too much emphasis on rehabilitation and not enough on punishment.

Yes, jails will still be around. Hopefully, someone will wise up by then and stop putting non-violent offenders in prison. Seriously, rapists and murderers belong in jail. People who got busted with drugs or evading taxes deserve other penalties. If they don't hurt anyone, then they aren't a danger and shouldn't be locked up for the taxpayers to support. Libertarians are the only ones these days who understand that.

I think there will always be jails...but in 100 years we'll have robots and surveillance's cameras(which already exists) watching us.
It's the FREEDOM we loose when we go to jail...and that punishment it the worst of human kind!! Just like animals locked up!!!

No I think in 100 years the situation will be reversed. All the law abiding white people will LIVE in the jails.. for safety.

Leaving the Uk to be run by all the chavs, hoodies, muslims, lesbians and homosexuals.

Yes, sadly, there will still be jails in 100 years.

You say you have been in jail and will probably be going back. Do you expect us to believe that community service would have stopped you from committing crimes? Eventually jail WILL stop you, either because you get wise and stop going or because you stay dumb and finally get kept there... your choice.

I hear you, it's totally out of control, but, unfortunately,
prison seems to be slowly becoming Americas next
big business.
More people should open their eyes to this situation.

I'm sorry you might be going back. The fact that you're
here, kind of tells me that what you did, wasn't violent.
