I think a more important question is WHY do you want to write a novel? As a publisher and mentor, I talk to young people all the time who tell me they want to be authors. Problem is, they don't like to read and don't really have anything to say! You have to decide what your goal is in writing the novel first.

Do you just want to see your name in print? Sorry, I probably can't help you much. You need more of a motivation.

Do you write a lot of short stories, but now you want to try your hand at novel writing? Well, that is different. Think about the sort of things you normally write about. How could these ideas be expanded upon? What sort of stories do you enjoy reading? Is there something in your favorite genre that you would like to see addressed?

If you haven't got any more imagination than this, then DON'T even consider writing - of all things - a novel. You have absolutely NO idea what it takes to do this, and if you have no other writing experience or credits to your name, I would choose something else. You need passion about your subject and if you don't know what subject that is, you are in serious trouble when it comes to writing. People who want to write novels (chuckle) have fertile imaginations and delve right into it. If with all of the things in life around you, you cannot come up with something, you will never be able to write even the first sentence. Go do something else. BTW: Sm bn got it right!

whatever it is, don't make it yet another science fiction or fantasy novel. All the young people these days are writing those, and I feel it a pity because sci fi is lacking in emotion, and simply being a teenager in today's world...you have so much to say!

No one can tell you want to write about.

When you have an idea that just won't sit still, you'll be able to write that book.

Keep thinking "What if?" and wonder and that idea will come.

write about yourself and something that you really care about.

Do NOT ask for people's opinion on what to write.
You cannot write about something that you do not know or care.
