I never read this book, but a teacher of mine in college read the ending (or at least I think it was the ending). The book had a sled dog in it and he was in a race and he died at the very end, either before he crossed the finish line or right after. If I remember correctly, his heart gave out or exploded or something. Can anyone help me with the name of that book? Thanks!

Could it be Jack London's Call of the Wild or White Fang? I don't recall either involving a dog dying in a race, but they are the only ones I can think of that have sled dogs and can be considered "classic."

It might have been a story about Balto as well he was a very famous sled dog and several books were written about him but more than likely it was Call of the Wild.
