They/We call it football, don't confuse it with what the rest of the world calls football and they call soccer.

Football is played with an oblong ball, and the players wear pads like a bunch pansies. The rules are somewhat silly, but the hype behind it amazing. The average American considers the superbowl as the endall of sporting events, but they haven't witnessed the world cup first hand, where instead of a bunch of inbred rednecks rooting for players of state or city, you have an entire world watching on. Living in California, the one thing I can tell you is that if you see someone sporting Raiders garb it is best to clutch your wallet a little more tight than normal.

Yes I'm an American, I even served in the Navy, but having had the chance to travel the globe for the last 15 years I've had the chance to look beyond and now think "football" is one of the biggest sissy sports around, and the hype behind it is media and investment driven, not just for the love of the game.

I agree with Alchemist:
1) Football
2) Basketball
3) Baseball

Well the American people is such a funny lot..which i find it hard to understand sometimes..They love to watch sports which is not well known outside their country such as( not in that order) American football, Ice hockey, baseball, Nascar etc..Vice versa football(soccer to American) is a universal sports where they do not have much interest. Other sports such as golf and tennis have big following too.
