I basically need to have a clear understanding of three things: what is a cycle index, an orbit pertaining to three dimensional objects such as tetrahedra or cubes.

How can I determine the cycle index and orbit pertaining to any polyhedra,

How can I determine the number of symmetries of a three dimesional object. It's not as easy as it looks, as I have been told that an equilateral triangle (two dimensional) has six symmetries, and I don't know why.

I don't know what branch of Math you are talking about, but here is a link that might be able to help you out on cycle indices
