I received a letter from a claims service stating that if I paid them $30, I would get $314 which the government had. They said Prudential tried to locate me and eventually gave the money to the government. Where in the government would the money go?

Check with the State Treasurers office in your state. Items such as this are often channel through them if their is an unpaid claim.

You are talking of a scam. Do not pay them a thing. Report them to your State Attorney General. If the government owes you money there are ways to get it with out paying someone. Plus if Prudential really did owe you money they would not pay the government, they could earn interest on that money.

Your state should have a web site you can go to. Every year, there are millions of dollars that go unclaimed. In California, the state has a government web page. Your state should also. Find the web site, then find the "State Controller" part. It may have a listing for "unclaimed property". On California's page, you can type in your name, and find if you are owed any money. If you are, then you just print out a form, fill it in, send it in, and you will receive a check.
When I have time, I like to type in friend's names, it's fun. Good luck.

It usually goes tothe state treasury. I found money owed my husband (from 10 years ago) on www.missingmoney.com. They will redirect you to the state dept that holds it.
