The Difference Between Conservatives and Liberals
There are many differences between conservatives and liberals. Notice that I did not say Republicans and Democrats because there are liberal Republicans and conservative Democrats. This essay does not refer to anyone in a particular party, so don't complain to me about how this Democrat does this or that Republican doesn't do that, that isn't the point of this essay. And, of course, not all conservatives or liberals follow what I'm saying below, but true conservatives and liberals follow most of the beliefs listed below. If you label yourself a conservative and don't think these things apply to you, then this essay isn't talking about you, although you might want to rethink what you label yourself. If you label yourself a liberal and most of the things below don't apply to you, then you might not really be a liberal and should think about this stuff a bit more. If you think you need to comment on this essay, don't. Unless you have some actual facts, evidence, statistics or research, don't waste your time. I've heard whatever pithy argument you have to make before and it didn't change my mind then, so when you say it, it won't change my mind now. If I'm wrong, prove it. If you are looking for a scientific/academic version of this comparison, go here. (Note that underlined passages are links, click on them to see evidence for the claims listed).
CONSERVATIVISM VS. LIBERALISM
Conservatives choose beliefs based on what someone else has told them and stick to those beliefs, even if they are proven to be 100% wrong. Liberals study various sources of information, come up with their beliefs based on the best available evidence and revise those beliefs when new evidence warrants such a change.
Conservatives know that what they believe is right. Liberals know that evidence and facts have no ideology or political party and that the evidence has to be examined, not the ideology.
Conservatives base their facts on their own opinions. Liberals base their opinions on objective, verifiable facts.
Conservatives are pessimistic about the future and about human nature. Liberals know that the present is better than the past and the future will be better than the present. Liberals know that human beings are basically good at heart and with some help, almost anyone can become a productive member of society.
Conservatives claim to oppose big government. Liberals know that conservatives really want small federal government and big local government, where they can exert more control. Liberals know that the federal government was at its smallest size in the last 50 years during the Clinton and Kennedy administrations and that the current Republican leadership loves big government.
Conservatives champion states rights at the expense of the federal government. Liberals know this divides the country, increases opportunities for fraud and government waste and allow states and communities to deny the rights of American citizens who do not fit in with the majority.
Conservatives believe that money is free speech. Liberals know that money allows the rich elites to silence the free speech and eliminate other freedoms of the masses.
Conservatives feel that it is okay to censor ideas or art they disagree with or find offensive and voices that disagree with them. Liberals know that censorship is the biggest threat to democracy.
Conservatives believe that there is a liberal media bias. Liberals know that the evidence strongly shows no such bias. Liberals know that the media is owned by corporations and that the media is pro-business and pro-establishment (meaning pro-conservative).
Conservatives are likely to see conspiracies in government, foreign countries, the media and parties that disagree with them. Liberals know that real conspiracies rarely work because people are usually not competent enough to pull them off and people have little resistance to money, so that any conspiracy can be sold out by just one member.
AMERICAN VALUES
Conservatives think that there is one set of values in the U.S. that can be called "American Values." Liberals know that there are numerous value systems in the U.S. and that there is no such thing as "American Values."
Conservatives think that American values are the best values in the world. Liberals know that American values are not any better or worse than those of most of the industrialized world, just different.
Conservatives think that America should seek to impose its values on other countries but are resistant to any outside influence on their own values. Liberals know that there should be one set of overall values that all human beings should work towards those values, not just foreigners. This does not mean that such a set of values has been acheived in America or the world yet, but that it should be.
Conservatives think that America never does anything bad, particularly their own leaders. Liberals know that America does many bad things in addition to the many good things America does. Liberals know that all leaders, regardless of ideology or party, are human and make mistakes, make bad choices and in extreme cases break the law.
Conservatives believe that patriotism is one of the greatest things that someone can have. Liberals know that patriotism is another name for nationalism and can lead to xenophobia and hatred.
Conservatives believe that anyone who disagrees with them is un-American. Liberals know that those who disagree with us might still be good people who have America's best interests at heart and that what is truly un-American is stifling dissent.
Conservatives believe that flag burning is an affront to America and should be made illegal. Liberals know that flag burning is a protected freedom and that making it illegal would be an insult to all Americans, particularly those who fought for American freedom. Liberals know that it is countries run by dictators and totalitarian parties that ban protest and dissent such as flag burning.
Conservatives believe that it is right for them to force their values upon the rest of America. Liberals know that you can't force anyone to adopt values other than their own and that values are relative and are private and personal beliefs as long as those values don't infringe upon the values of others.
Conservatives champion traditional American values. Liberals know that traditional American values include racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia and many other negative aspects. Liberals know that we need to abandon traditional American values and forge newer and better values.
CIVIL RIGHTS
Conservatives believe that racism in America no longer exists or is close to non-existance. Liberals know that there are still hundreds of racist incidents every year all the way up to and including murder. Liberals know that there are still issues of institutional racism as well, including a glass ceiling, racial profiling, harsher prison sentences for the same crimes and less pay for the same work, among others.
Conservatives believe that sexism in America no longer exists or is close to non-existance. Liberals know that there are still thousands upon thousands of sexist incidents every year all the way up to and including rape and murder. Liberals know that there are still issues of institutional sexism as well, including a glass ceiling, sexual assault, sexual harassment, gender stereotyping, weaker criminal penalties for crimes that primarily affect women, inequality in the judicial system, less pay for the same work and many others.
Conservatives believe that homosexuality is a choice and that it is immoral behavior. Liberals examine the scientific evidence and know that homosexuality isn't a choice and that it isn't immoral behavior and exists in many species in nature.
Conservatives believe that homosexuals shouldn't be allowed "special rights." Liberals know that protection from violence, protection from discrimination, marriage, spousal benefits and adoption rights are not special rights but are rights protected for all Americans by the Constitution.
Conservatives believe in picking labels for people based on arbitrary criteria and based on things that are beyond the individual's control and dismissing them or denigrating them based on those labels. Liberals know that it is wrong to judge someone based on something they have no control over and that it is only right to judge someone based on their active choices, supported by actual evidence not just a "feeling."
Conservatives believe that economic rights are the most important rights that Americans have. Liberals know that economic rights, while important, are only some of the rights that Americans have and that they are no more important that other civil rights.
Conservatives believe that there should be no additional penalties for those who commit hate crimes. Liberals know that hate crimes are a strong threat to democracy and should be punished at much harsher levels until they are largely eliminated.
Conservatives believe that the Confederate Flag is nothing more than a symbol of Southern culture and that there is nothing wrong with it. Liberals know that the Confederate Flag is a symbol of a time in Southern history that was defined by racism and Southerners fight to protect their "right" to own black human beings as property. Liberals know that the Confederate Flag is a symbol of racism and hatred.
Conservatives think affirmative action should be outlawed. Liberals know that racism has not been eliminated in hiring for jobs, the awarding of government contracts and admissions to schools and that affirmative action is still necessary and that it should remain legal until it is no longer necessary.
Conservatives believe that affirmative action is reverse racism. Liberals know that the system is still biased against minorities and that the only reason there are fewer "qualified" minority applicants is because the actions of whites prevent minorities from becoming "qualified." Liberals know that "qualifications" that are used in many cases are biased and do not represent how well an individual will do in school or in a job. #1

I don't think the party affiliation of a candidate should play as big of a part in politics as it does. I would recommend waiting to see who is on the ballot, doing your research on the candidates, and voting for the candidate that you believe most closely correlates with what the country needs at the time.
That being said, a certain party may more closely match your values than another, but nobody fits perfectly into the mold of a Democrat, a Republican, a Green, a Socialist, etc.
In my personal opinion, Mitt Romney is the candidate that most closely matches our country's needs for 2008-2011. Although he is a Republican like Bush (I am not particularly Republican myself), he has voiced his stance on how he would handle the Iraq conflict, and although he has not once criticized our President, he has stated that there are some things that he would do somewhat differently. The most important part, however, is that he would not simply back out prematurely and create more problems than he would resolve. Plus, he has been governor of a heavily Democratic state (Massachussets) for several years and has built up a strong support among his citizens despite his conservative nature. That is evidence that his government would be government by the people, of the people, and for the people.

You could ask the thousands living in Luton and Dunstable who decided to replace their Labour Council with a Liberal Democrat one, as they must have had a reason? You can also ask them why most of them will be definitely voting either Conservative or Labour at the next General Election having discovered just how totally incompetent Liberal-Democrats are when they do get into power anywhere in the U.K.

Well, they are the party with the most distributative tax policy, so the Lib Dems are far more left leaning then either of the other two parties in UK.
To say the Lib Dems are soft on crime is ludicrous, they just favour a more rehabilitative approach than the Tories and Labour. Might be an idea, mightn't it. With prisoners coming out of our ears, and reoffending at a high isn't it right to try a different approach??

The only purpose in voting LibDem is in the form of "tactical voting", when the electorate of a given constituency may choose to vote for the LibDem candidate in order to keep either and/or the Labour or Conservative candidate[s] out.
Vote LibDem if you must, but they're not going to form a government. It's a straight fight between Labour or Tory.
Take my advice, no one in either the Labour or Tory parties is ever going to support or vote for proportional representation in a UK General Election - they'd have to be out of their minds. This is exactly how Adolf Hitler got elected.
DOWN WITH PR.

Thank god they never will reach number 10!
Lest we forget that for several years they were hiding the fact that thieir leader was a full blown alcoholic - thats not what I'd call fit for government.
Can you imagine the possibilities - wheres the PM its PMQ's in 10 minutes? - oh he's got his head down the bog, it was a heavy one last night.
The mind boggles - it really does.
