I'm wondering if I should bring US bank notes or AE travellers cheques to exchange in Japanese Yen in JAPAN. Can anyone give me suggestions? Thank you!!

TCs are safer, but some places charge service fees so any lower rate would be lost on that. The best would of course be cash. Not as safe, but much easier to exchange.

I disagree with the guy that says many places don't accept CCs. Most places do. I will say that if you go into the deep country hill sides where electricy is a luxury, yes, CCs won't be accepted, but in the cities and towns, most every place does. I would go VISA or MASTERCARD. No Discover of American Express. There are places that does not accept them.

I have heard that the exchange rate for travellers cheques is better than cash but I would recommend using a credit card instead of either.

You must remember that if you use a travellers cheque you must exchange it at a bank, same thing with cash. Stores will give terrible exchange rates. That is one reason a credit card is always better.

I do not agree with the above. Many places in Japan DO NOT accept credit cards. They will only accept Japanese yen. I would bring travellers checks to exchange at a bank.

Travellers cheques gets lower rates than cash but I do agree with the above. Use your credit card for purchases because not only will you earn reward points for your purchases but they also give you better rates.

You do have to pay a 3-4% transaction fee for foreign currency transaction. You can also use your ATM Debot card for cash withdrawels while in Japan if you have Visa electron or such widely accepted logos on your cards.
