I have a monkey...I have had him for 6 months now. He clings to me like crazy. Lately when he knows I am getting ready to leave he starts going crazy and crys...yes my monkey crys...but I feel so bad for leaving him. Normally I take him with me when I go to the beach and to work. The past couple of days I have been in the process of moving and I cant always take him because I can't always be watching him and he can't always be around my neck. Whats wrong with him?? He is almost a year old now...why is he so clingy??

Thanks so much for your answers...I think I am just stressed out about moving and all that. Monkeys are the best pets...they are so loving...minus the pooping issue but oh well. Thanks again...

He's just not used to being without you! When you leave, give him something special of yours - a favorite tee shirt, your pillow case, anything that smells like you. That should help comfort him while you're gone. Give him a picture of you to look at, or make a cassette tape of your voice and let it play when you leave.
Hope it works out!

My understanding is that moneys are supposed to be clingy. I aint no expert, but I have seen a couple of other people with monkeys. How do you feed'm? Have you tried to give'm some food at the time you're leaving? Monkeys usually love food, especially if they are hungry. So if you can make sure that he's hungry and you give'm food right before you leave that may do the trick. You might wanna try to give'm food that takes some effort to eat, so he's busy with the food. I've seen people give'm sugar cane, large seedy fruit [don't know name] where the edible part is inside the seed. Good luck.

It sounds like he's really attached to you... I don't know what kind of monkey you have, but if you think about monkey behavior in the wild, they tend to be social animals, often living in groups. Because they live in groups monkeys cry and are terrified of being abandoned or left behind ever, because they know instinctively that to be left behind in the wild is to die. When a monkey group abandons or outcasts a fellow monkey they're leaving him/her to die... So your monkey probably feels like you're going to abandon him like that.

Dogs are also pack animals and tend to work along the same lines - which is why they initially hate being left alone... though they can get used to the fact that you'll come back.

That's probably the "why," of the behavior. I can't immediately think of any solutions though.

Monkeys have intelligence, free will, and a social instinct. You can't go to work, since he has a job too. If you can't be there all day to help him with this 'monkey' job, he is going to be miserable.

I hope you really don't have a Monkey... : ( Please find a more suitable pet.

Also, having a monkey as a pet is very likely to be illegal in the country / province / state / city that you live.

If you want to keep a healthy monkey, you gotta slap him sometimes to make him feel good about how good you're making him feel. Your little critter is over-bonded probably because you have worn him around like a piece of jewelry. He hasn't a clue what its like to be unconnected with you. If this is true, you are doing the animal emotional damage. He needs another monkey to give him a real view of WHO/WHAT he is. Otherwise, get him a shrink.
