I saw nothing in him that would make people think he was so great, he was a thug-why people look up to someone like that is beyond me.

He was a poet.
Not Ghandi type, ghandi wasn't into violence and Tupac was Gang oriented.

But it was his experience. He had such a deep heart.
Go get a book called "the rose that grew fromn concrete"

The Rose That Grew From Concrete Autobiographical

Did you hear about the rose that grew from a crack
in the concrete
Proving nature's law wrong it learned 2 walk
without having feet
Funny it seems but by keeping its dreams
it learned 2 breathe fresh air
Long live the rose that grew from concrete
when no one else ever cared!
- Tupac Shakur

His poetry is actually compared widely to Emily Dickenson, the modern male Emily.

Also have you ever heard his song, " baby don't cry" Such a moving song, and the song about his mom?
He has a lot of moving music A LOT, you just have to open your ears.

The people who admire Tupac do so because he came from nothing to a superstar without changing the essence of who he was. He was not only an amazing lyricist, but he also wrote about socially relevant topics in ways that people could understand. Many of his lyrics seem full of misogyny and violence at first, but once you listen to a whole song, you will understand the context that they are spoken within, and it gives them new and deep meaning.

people love him as much as they do because he died. he was sort of 'branded' a s a martyr at that point. look what happened when biggy died! faith evans and puff daddy must have made a mint with that shite cover of that police song they used as a biggy tribute. its a sad truth that people will profit from tragedy, its just sick that you would do that when your own husband dies. curt cobain is another good example of this, courtney love has sustained an embarassing but luctrative career off the back of his death, although he was an icon before he died aswell, just not as much.
