ok lets run thru the areas... from most expensive to cheapest...

west end - nice, close to everything- no need to take transit
a small1 bedroom apartment will cost you $950ish

westside (kitsilano) - nice, near the beach, good shopping (not cheap), make sure you do yoga and get some lulu lemon clothes
a larger 1 bedroom will cost about the $950ish

main street (mt pleasant) - funky, young, independent, cool shopping
a 1 bedroom apt will cost you $800

commercial drive - funky, more hippiesh than any other part of vancouver, cheap shopping,
1 bedroom approx $750

strathcona - neat old neighbourhood, one of the oldest parts of vancouver, unfortunately too close to the downtown eastside
a 1 bedroom apt could cost you about $650

downtown eastside (DTES) - poorest postal code in canada, highest levels of HIV infection in canada
you could get a 1 bedroom for $500 but i wouldn't suggest it

Don't get sucked into the downtown eastside. You can avoid this area, but "strathcona" is very cheap. Same with commercial drive. It is where you find a sort of alternative lifestyle. rents are cheap and temporary work is available. A good area is the westside or the west end. You are sure to find a room mate at any of these places.

Try the burbs rather than the city... as you may find yourself in the wrong setting having your finncial situation at present. There are more opportunities for unskilled people in the burbs, (horticulture, plants and landscaping is huge) people are more freindly, it is safer and accomodation and food are way more affordable.

Hastings East, Richmond and Burnaby are probably your best bets.
