I have worked in the financial services industry for over 30 years and with 4 different companies. I have seen this every place I have worked to one degree or another. Just because someone is not competent at their assigned tasks does not mean they cannot be very competent at office politics, brown-nosing, and generally giving the boss what the boss wants.
It is a simple fact of life. We all have to decide how we define "success" in our careers and if gaining financial rewards through means other than hard work is worth the sacrifice of our personal integrity.

It's typical patronage for a variety of reasons. In smaller companies where people may know each other or are related outside of company time, they can easily scratch each other's back and prop each other up with no regard to workmanship - like giving my brother n law a job because of no other reason than my lazy *** brother n law needs a job and I have to keep my wife happy. In larger companies it's politics as usual - people jockeying for power to protect themselves, build security walls and blankets. It's all done by fearful people that can't stand on their own, like a lot of people that work for the government at any level.
Learn how to be skillful and educated and ultimately more independent and you'll free yourself from the rotten weak people and the rotten system.

it is always. Even one of my brothers workers got angry when I was paid 20 dollars an hour and he was only paid 13 an hour. He said that he knew carpentry and I didnt. And we were working on some carpentry work. Well, Im the boss' younger brother and it doesnt matter if I dont know any carpentry. The worker nearly got fired for that stint. The way we saw it, was that, he got paid what he was worth. And I get paid whatever my brother gives me.

Always the case... social skills is the most important ability in a workplace as long as you have somewhat competent work skills. Obviously someone that can't do their basic job should not get anything but the boot!

Employees need to suck up to the bosses and do a little self promotion to get noticed regardless of how good the employee is (specially in large corporations).

Unfortunately, brown-nosers seem to get rewarded more because they are constantly putting themselves in the focus of those who make the decisions. Don't be afraid to let you boss know your successes - no one will do it for you most of the time. Good luck

Sometimes you have to toot your own horn in order to get favorably noticed, and those brown-nosers have made an art of it. Stand up for yourself the next time evaluations come around.

The asskissers move up while the ones who just do their job get no recognition.
