Memoirs of a Geisha is an interesting study on the lives of women forced into a submissive trade in Japan. A slavery book I enjoyed is Kindred by Olivia Butler. The Classic Slave Narratives, edited by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. is eye-opening. When studying submission vs. slavery, I'd consider how much damage the situation did to the person's character, how (and if) they tried to escape the situation (or did they accept it). Beloved by Toni Morrison is my favorite book, and it shows just how far a woman was wililng to go to prevent her child from becoming a slave.

I would explore the book The Marketplace, by Laura Antoniou. Although it does include slavery, the content is highly philisophical and extremely thought-provoking. I do warn you, however, that it is graphic.
