that line, is it still considered a 1st down even though he was tackled behind the plane? Or would it be considered a 1st down by virtue of the fact that he crossed the 1st down plane?

You are given forward progress. Otherwise, what's to stop a defensive player from picking someone up and carrying them backwards 50 yards? Now, if the player runs past the marker, and then backtracks and is tackled - he is marked where he is tackled.

it is a first down becuas of the rule of "forward progress"

Spot of the ball will be determined where initial contact was made. So if the carrier crossed the 1st down marker yet was pushed back and tackled behind, forward progress would rule a 1st down.

If he is driven back behind the 1st down marker by contact from a defensive player then he is awarded his forward progress and it is a first down.
If he crosses the 1st down marker and then retreats behind the marker on his own and is tackled then it would not be a first down.

It's a matter of forward progress--if a runner is moving forward then hit backwards twenty yards, they spot the ball at the point of his farthest forward progress. If the runner is hit back twenty yards but not tackled, then he makes an attempt to run forward and tackled the spot would be back there.

that would be the forward progress rule.
The ball is marked where the runner stops moving forward not where he is actually tackled at.

If he breaks the plane and gets hit, then his knee touches behind the first down plane, it is still a first down.

Usually referees spot the ball on the last place the player was making forward progress. If he is pushed back, it doesnt count agaainst him. Its really up to the ref.

it depends on his motion. if he is going forward and is dragged back once he passes the marker he is given the first down. if he passes the marker and goes back on his own accord and is tackled it is at the spot he was tackled.
