Besides the education, intelligence and experience... I've been teaching for 15 years and I see too many teachers who really don't like to be around children. They don't seem to enjoy them, especially the kids who really struggle. So, I think what you nee the most is the love and appreciation of children. If you don't have that you will be miserable because it's a lot of hard work and not too much money. Good luck to you.

Things are changing every year. This is my second year in college to become an elementary teacher and every year there is something new. The best advice is to be flexible that is the most important and just go with the flow with anything that comes up. Be prepared for family issues such as abuse, homelessness, carzy parents, and behavioral problems. I am a paraprofessional and I work at a school everyday in first grade and I see and hear things I never thought I would hear from 6 and 7 years olds. Just be prepared for anything, they are the best I love them all from ECE to 5th grade!!

1. Understand, enjoy, and appreciate working with kids.
2. Enjoy education- like school and the process in general.
3. Most elementary ed teachers are primarily language arts people with a love of literature and the language. This is actually a little unfortunate since it usually means a certain weakness in the hard sciences and math.
4. Organizational and planning skills. You've got to be pretty good at planning activities, organizing people, keeping track of projects and assignments, tracking your equipment and supplies...
5. Management skills running the human element of the classroom and others you meet daily.

Teaching requires LOTS of patience, not just for the students but also for the parents (actually, especially for the parents). You must be willing to be an actress...you can't go to class looking all depressed even when you are because the students can read you like a book.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE learn good classroom management skills. Get the Harry Wong book and read it NOW! You can't have a smooth-running classroom without knowledge of how to manage your classroom. Learning happens in classrooms where the students know what their expectations are and what the routine is for every procedure in your classroom!
You don't have to the brightest crayon in the box, just know that teaching requires learning EVERY SINGLE DAY OF YOUR LIFE!!

Patience I would believe is the most important, because there will be kids who do not listen...at all.
