Or is it more patriotic to withhold your support until the system is fixed so that the best people can be elected, not just the people who are best at sucking up to big corporate donors?

Daniel A, I agree people should be more interested in and informed about the people running for office. But shouldn't our electoral system ENCOURAGE that instead of encouraging candidates sucking up to big corporate donors so they can run stupid TV ads?

If you withhold your support until the system is fixed you will not only NOT be patriotic, the system WON'T ever be fixed.

The most patriotic thing you could do is really get involved in politics. Find out everything you can about the man you're putting in office before you do it. Vote for HONESTY above POLITICAL VIEWS, because if the candidate is honest it'll take care of all other problems, and if you disagree with him, his honesty is bound to lead him to the truth. Joseph Lieberman is a perfect example.

Campaign finance is definitely a sticky subject. The problem is that everyone is worried about violating our 1st amendment rights. It is my opinion that only individuals should be allowed to donate to political candidates. This would ensure freedom of speech, while eliminating the problems caused by labor unions and such, who use their members' funds to support candidates they disagree with.

It is most patriotic (i.e. good for your country) to change a corrupt system, not just opt out of it.

Get involved in initiatives such the Clean Elections campaign, support any politician brave enough to put the needs of his constituents above the needs of corporate donors IRRELEVANT of which party they're from (give time, money, hand out leaflets, anything), write and lobby your representatives to do what you employed them to do - even run for office yourself if the current ones are just too corrupt.

Make it so the ones best at sucking up to big corporate donors are unelectable.

If you are referring to Bush losing the popular vote, but winning the electoral vote, I do not support Bush. That being said, although I do not support the current president, I do support the presidency.

As shown by Tom Delay in Texas, cons are found of skewing districts and voting laws to their own advantage. Nevermind what the people actually want. 2000 election and the popular vote didnt matter.

I don't think it is the electoral system that is currupt, I think it is the politicians themselves. The care more about their own political gains than what is best for the country.

Tell you what - there are other countries that have a political system that would be more suited to you.
China, Cuba, Zimbabwe come to mind.

Electoral college has nothing to do with corporations. It has to do with equitably deciding Presidential races based on population. Get an education.
