My OB is allowing me to have only 2 ultrasounds since I am not high risk. I had one at 8 weeks to make sure that the pregnancy was going okay, and I will have my last ultrasound at 20 weeks to check on the baby and to determine it’s sex.

My friend is upset because her insurance is only allowing her to have one ultrasound at 20 weeks.

Is this normal? How many ultrasounds did you have?

For a typical pregnancy none or 1 ultrasound is normal and generally all that is covered by ins.

An 8 week appointment, although it is one of those really exciting things for expectant moms, is really not neccacary, and most gynos and doctors do them for that reason. The main reason why they would do an ultrasound that early is because of complications, they may suspect tubal pregnancy or such. Another thing to consider, ask any mother, how many ultasounds they had with their second, and most every one will tell you only one. The fact is that an ultrasound is actually disturbing to pregnancies, and an early ultrasound can be fatal in the wrong curcumstance. Tell your friend that it is better for the baby if she can make due with the one 20 weeks, or even a week later to ensure the formation of genatilia if she wants to know the sex. Babies genitals are usually formed by 20 weeks but in some cases, it takes another week.

I was only suppose to have 1. The only one my insurance would cover is the 20 week. I personally thought it was crazy when I heard that. So being that I was not satisfied with 1 ultrasound, I decided to pay and get the 3d/4d done. It was not that costly. The package I got allowed me to have two ultrasounds done each an hour long. The whole scan is on dvd. A website to show my family. Bunches and buches of pictures. You get pictures printed from the scan and also many many more pictures on cd. I was amazing. I went at 24 weeks. And I go back on Feb 24. I am now well pleased. I strongly suggest that if she is disapointed only having one ultrasound to pay for a 3d/4d. Like I said it is amazing. It was worth ever penny I paid. They have different packages to fit anyones's income.

My insurance said one. But due to other factors I had four. My first because I was not sure how far along I was ( Igot pregnant while breastfeeding my son and a had a two month gap from my LMP) the second at 12 weeks because I was very dehydrated and a heartbeat could not be found, I was also hospitalized. Third at 18 weeks, the only orginial approved one, and one at 30 weeks because at the 18 weeks scan they found a cystic wall in my uterus and it needed to be checked to make sure it went away, luckly it did. But if I did not have all these problems I would have only had the 18-20 week ultrasound.

Some docs don't do any ultrasounds unless they feel there is some risk to the pregnancy. One or two is normal. I had six, but that's because my son was diagnosed with a "large head." So funny. They were warning me for an 11-12 pound baby. My son was born extremely healthy, 7 lbs., 10 ounces.

A lot depends on insurance. Unless you have problems, many insurance companies will only allow one u/s - usually at 20 weeks. I was over 35 when I became pregnant with my daughter and had a prior miscarriage. I also had an amnio that showed my daughter had Down's Syndrome, so I had several u/s. I am 8.5 weeks pregnant again and have already had 2 u/s. If your friend is young and healthy, then she really shouldn't worry about it unless she wants to pay for one herself. My OB charges $300 for an u/s.

My doctor is only doing 2. I had one at 20 weeks and one at 28 weeks..if i seem to be not progressing or if my next blood test comes back showing problem I will have to have one a month till the end. So I think 2 is what is usual unless you have a problem. I dont know why she would only be able to have one..she should check with her Dr. and maybe they can find a way around it.

I had an internal done at 8 weeks to confirm pregnancy, one at 20 to determine the sex and just had one at 39 weeks to check on the baby's position and amniotic fluid, etc.

My Ex is diabetic, so she had 8 to 10 ultrasounds during her pregnancy. No harm was done to the baby.
