Because it is visual stimulation. The brain has many sectors, one of which has to deal with visual stimuli. No matter what the intellect, age or reasoning skills of an adult, should that portion of the brain has receive a stimulus then it responds. Visual stimulation also involves other areas of the brain, so for some, a game of any kind may just be a game for others it is something that allows your brain to multifunction and gives you a higher sense of mental alertness while playing that game and leaves a sense of well being.

Also for some who view themselves, of a higher intellect, most likely find it hard to find something that actually gives them any sense of challenge in everyday life, however with a seemingly innocent game we can all, find challenge, no matter what level of intellect you have. Getting that kind of stimulation and challenge in an otherwise monotonous life or day can be a mood lifter for many and goes a long way to explain why many everyday people as well as higher intellect people are ones that write programs and make video games.

It simply gives the mind a challenge and everyone, no matter what intellect, needs that kind of brain stimulation sometimes.
