ANYTHING put out by Motown in the 60's...James Jamerson redefined bass playing. I know that the songs sound a little cheesy now...but go back and listen to the bass lines....absolutely awesome and unbelievably FUNKY

Anything by Les Claypool (Primus, Frog Brigade, etc)! Most of the music he writes essentially has the bass guitar leading the music instead of having a lead guitar. The stuff he does is unbelievable.

Another classic band that the bass seems to play a very dominant roll in is Rush. Those canucks are some serious musicians!

Day Tripper by the Beatles has one of the most famous bass intros.

Second that emotion re Geddy Lee, with the provision that you listen to anything pre Moving Pictures. The songs aftert hat lacked a bit of punch as he switched from the "Rickenbacker 4001" to a "Steinberger" bass. The reason for the switch was the he started to play a lot of keyboards and the humongous neck on "The Rick" got in the way, whereas the "Steinberger" has no neck". Try "Hemispheres"

Check out King Crimson from the 80's and up for Tony Levin's fantastic bass lines as well. (Discipline, Beat, adn Three Of a Perfect Pair) have some fantastic bass lines, however someof them (maybe most) are produced by a "Stick", a ten stringed instrument unlike any other bass.
