Yes. A male releases some ejaculate prior to actually ejaculating, throughout intercourse. The sperm can stay "alive" for three days inside the uterus. A lot depends on just how fertile you are. Unless you want to change your name to "mom" you should always use some sort of protection, before intercourse.
On a side note, that's how people can increase their chances of having a girl or a boy. If you have intercourse up o three days prior to ovulation, you increase your chances of having a girl because the "X" sperm are long lived. If you have intercourse the day you ovulate, you increase the chances of having a boy because the "Y" sperm, while short lived, are quite zippy little guys and can outswim the "X" sperm, thus getting to the egg first.
