Sounds as though you uninstalled the device (driver). Windows needs a driver to know what and how to use every device that it uses.
Look on your sound card or even the box it came in for the model nuber and make of your sound card. Then go to http://driverguide.com , or the manufactor of your sound card website, and intsall the driver.

P.S.
A system restore might return the device driver, give it a try, should hurt a thing... If not, just go grab the driver need of the net.

go back into device manger and then under the the tab that says "Sound, video and game controllers" see if there is a little red cross over the speaker symbol next to the driver name. If there is then look on the icon bit where all the controls are and clik on the button that has a little picture of a computer with a green tick on it.

That should (hopefully) sort out your problem. If not then i have no idea what you did short of uninstalling the driver.

Hope it helps

From Control Panel>System>Hardware Tab, select Device Manager and right click to Refresh. It will find any audio device that you have in your computer.
You might also have disabled the audio device, if you click on the + sign next to Sound, video and game controllers you can enable/disable from there.
