Mud is dirt which has been made wet by the rain, that's all mud is.

Ever notice the dust that accumulates on your car when it's been sitting for a few days? That's where the mud comes from. Imagine an object sitting for thousands of years without being cleaned. The dust accumulates, and the occasional rains wash the mud to lower places, eventually burying the object.

It's either mud (soil + water) from the water table in the ground or it's just moisture left over from precipitation that happened earlier that makes it when it mixes with dirt that deposited over the dig site..
