Television is certainly an influence - but it delivers what people want.
If people don't watch a program, it goes off the air.
There is a control on your tv - it is called the off button. If you push it, the tv goes off, and it no longer is any influence whatever.
When I was teaching in high school, I always inserted a section on watching television. We teach our children how to read a play, how to write an essay, how to read poetry, even how to read a newspaper. Why in the world do we think they should not also be taught how to watch television?
Intelligent tv watching involves knowing the medium, how it works, and being aware of the influences that it makes on you as you watch. Unless you are aware of what is going on, you're a patsy, a ******, just waiting to be influenced by people who really only want your money, however they can get it. Short-term, by selling you something, but also longer term, by changing how you think about thinks - and that includes the so-called news programs and "reality" shows.
They all come from the same source and they all have the same agenda.

I disagree!!! If you think about it thouroughly....books and stories have been around far longer than television. Serial killings, for example, have been around since before TV was conceived. It is the lack of guidance by the parents that allow for children to believe that television is a realistic approach to everyday life. Television is for entertainment purposes and in the case of certain programmes attempts to educate the public.

It wastes a lot of time which can be spend on reading books etc., you really cant say that TV has educational value and escape - true that TV has educational value but the temptation is greated to go to the entertainment side and fall a prey to all those obscene pics and songs which corrupt many a mind...

I think the negative impact on our society is sheer apathy! We see so much murder, war, killing, violent sex that it desensitizes us daily.
