No one really knows who St Valentine actually was. There are two men who could be responsible for the traditional association with love and marriage, but the most likely theory is that Valentine was a priest during the reign of Roman Emperor Claudius II.
The story goes that Emperor Claudius had issued a decree that Roman soldiers were not allowed to marry - because marriage would inhibit their ability to fight.
But romantic Valentine continued to marry soldiers in secret, until eventually his clandestine activities were discovered and he was jailed. Before being beheaded he fell in love with his jailer's daughter, for whom he left a note signed 'Your Valentine' before he was led away to his death.

Early History of Valentine's Day:

One thought is: The early origins of Valentine's Day can be traced back to the ancient Roman celebration of Lupercalia, which was held on February 15. The celebration of Lupercalia honored the gods Lupercus and Faunus and the founders of Rome.

Another thought is: There were two saints named Valentine and a priest a named Valentine. One saint was executed on February 14th and 227 years later, Pope Gelasius named February 14, Valentine's Day for him. The priest named Valentine disobeyed the Emperor and secretly married couples.

And another thought is: Birds and fowl select their mates on February 14th.

Modern History of Valentine's Day:

Began in France and England.
The first box of Valentine's candy was in the late 1800's.
The Duke of Orleans (a frenchman) sent the first Valentine, after being captured in 1415. He sent it on Valentine's Day to his wife.

Also another random fact:

The expression "wearing your heart on your sleeve" comes from a Valentine's Day party tradition. Young women would write their names on slips of paper to be drawn by young men. A man would then wear a woman's name on his sleeve to claim her as his valentine.

Make every day a Valentine's day, show the people you love how much you love them every day.

On Feb 14th show the people you meet & see how love can be spread with a single word, smile or gesture instead of walking blindly past them.

It's all too commercial nowadays anyway.

I LOVE YOU...

It originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries. Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it "From Your Valentine".
