1) All industries go through cycles. Yes there are a lot of airlines having difficulty - this would be because they were protected for so long. De-regulation produces competition. Competition produces much lower prices but it also means some competitors will fall out.
2) The automobile industry is doing fine - just not the US headquartered automobile makers. Everything they're losing has come at Toyota's gain and all Toyotas sold in a country are made in that country, including the US.
3) Shipbuilding is a highly cyclical industry and right now all benefit from the switch to double-hulled tankers is over - there are a lot of boats coming on the water now - this industry has peaked and won't again for some time.
4) No steel industry???? That's a joke, right?
5) Service sector is 80% of the economy. And only 20% is food service, hospitality, retail, etc.... and that includes the managerial jobs in those areas. Doctors, lawyers, accountants, anyone in computers, scientists are all "service sector."
6) 4.5% unemployment, economy still creating over 150K jobs per month even after 17 rate hikes, GDP growth in the 3s for the second half of 2006 even after 17 rate hikes..... Median family income adjusted for inflation is 1/3 higher than it was when I was growing up in the 1970s - - - - yeah, the economy is great.

This is the worst our Nation has been, since America came back from WW II. I too would like to see where they are getting their figures from, when nobody is allowed to draw unemployment with this Administration. They are still unemployed like the Great Depression. Crime is off the chart along with food stamps. Ronald Reagan did the same thing though when he was President, and restructuring the Air Traffic Controllers Union. This lead up too the Automotive Manufacturers following suit and outsourcing employment to China. The people that put in just short of 30 years employment lost their retirements and benefits. What Republicans don't understand about the Hospitals the Unions built, and sent Union patrons too, created the economy. It's gone too far with them replacing America labor with Communist labor.

YOU CAN BLAME THE UNIONS FOR THAT. THE COST OF LABOR IS OUTRAGEOUS IN THIS COUNTRY. WHY DOES MY COMPANY PAY 55$ PER HOUR TO A UNION EMPLOYEE TO CHANGE A LIGHT BULB AND HE'S THE ONLY ONE THAT IS ALLOWED TO DO IT BECAUSE OF UNION RULES. THAT IS WHY EVERY COMPANY WITH ANY BRAINS IS OUT OF HERE. NOT TO MENTION THE HIGH COST OF DOING BUSINESS IN AMERICA. WHAT MAKES A WORKER IN AMERICA BETTER THAN ANY WORKER OVER SEAS? THEY DO THE SAME WORK AND THEY DON'T CHARGE OUTRAGEOUS LABOR COST. THE ECONOMY HAS BEEN ON THE RISE. THOSE THINGS YOU POINTED OUT HAVE BEEN ON THE DECLINE FOR YEARS IT'S NOT BUSH JR. FAULT IT'S THE ARROGANT AMERICAN WORKER THAT BELIEVE THEY DESERVE 100 DOLLARS AN HOUR FOR TRIVIAL LABOR. UNTIL THE LABOR MARKET IN THIS COUNTRY STRAIGHTENS OUT YOU WILL SEE MORE AND MORE JOBS GO OVER SEAS. AND THE MORE JOBS WE LOSE THE WEAKER WE BECOME. IT'S TIME TO MAKE A BIG CHANGE.

If you can't see that this economy is booming and running circles around all others on the planet, you are truly a Bush-hating Liberal.
I get a kick out of news stories on good economic news; you can rest assured they will throw in some negativity. Usually something like "this can't last" or "this other indicator shows it is better, but not as much better as hoped for."

Welcome to the future. Those that cannot adapt or were in overpaid jobs before will fall by the wayside. Those than can adapt will prosper. I fell on my butt, but got up, dusted myself off and moved on. I am doing 10 times better than I ever did before.

Hmmm, I wonder why businesses are going overseas? Could it be the huge taxes here in the US?
