First off, if a person dies before his birthday any particular year, then he does not gain that year of age, and you subtract one from the difference. Thus, Rutherford B. Hayes, (October 4, 1822 – January 17, 1893), died 71 years after he was born, but didn't see his birthday that year, so only lived to be 70. If only the years were given, then the answer would be "either 70 or 71".

Secondly, there is no year zero. After 1 BC came AD 1, with nothing in between. This is because BC means years before Christ, and AD is an ordinal number representing the year of the Christian era. (Although, granted, BC and AD were invented centuries later.) Therefore, when determining the difference between a BC year and an AD year, we subtract one again.

Thus, the difference between 80 BC and AD 4 is 83 years, so he lived to be either 82 or 83 years old.

Should be 85. Sorry it is 85

You need to make a few assumptions the first of which is date of birth and death so for arguments sake lets assume 30th June of the given years.

So the guy was born on 80 years and six months before the birth of Christ and he died 4 years and six months after the birth of christ. Sum these and he would have been 85 years of age.

The no year zero argument is flawed as there was quite clearly elapsed time between the birth and the one digit being flagged namely one year.

For example we are in the 21st century but its 2007

84. Because if Jesus is born at 0 then 80 would be -80 so add 80 and 4 to get to 4ad which mkes 84. You probably didn't understand that but oh well. The point is is that I think it's 84. Hope this helps! But it could be 83 as there is no year 0. Choose your pic! (I think it's 83 myself!).

84 years.
When it is the year 0 that person is 80. So with another 4 years he is 84, and it's 84 a.d

Since you have given no exact date of birth or death, the answer is 84. There are twenty four months (2 years) between 1 BC and AD 1. AD = Anno Domini (Lat. for "The year of our Lord"). While there is no year 0, there is 6 months BC and AD 6 months. Duh.
