In July I moved and couldn't get service any longer. My service disconnected. I have some important pictures on it. How long will they stay? How can I get them downloaded?

As long as you have a sim card in it, even if it's inactive, I think you should always at least be able to access the contents you have stored on the phone. I have an inactive sim card that I keep in one of my old phones fom a couple of years ago and I can still look at the pics on it, play games, etc.
Depending on what kind of phone you have you may be able to download your pictures straight from to your computer with a special usb cord designed for your phone. I have a Razr and I got a program called Motorola Phone Tools to transfer pics, etc.
Check Best Buy or eBay and see if they carry a similar program for your model of phone.
