Since it's a literary reference to a George Orwell novel ("1984", to be precise), the name "Big Brother" - an entity that watches everything that you do - is very accurate and descriptive.

The name 'Big Brother' came from the story '1984' written by George Orwell, it was also the inspiration for the series 'Room 101'.
1984 was about a country were everything you did was observed. Room 101, was a room which contains a persons worse fears.

No I do not think it is sexist, because the title obviously comes from 1984. There could still be another program entitled 'Big Sister' for you to enjoy.

I have never seen this program.

However, I think the term "Big Brother" comes from a George Orwell book, "1984." I must confess I haven't read the book, but I know that the story concerns the constant monitoring of the citizens- by a strong, totalitarian govt- called "Big Brother."

I don't think sexism comes in at all.

Maybe I'm wrong about this???

It was the all seeing government in George Orwell's 1984, and that is what the programme is based on.
It is no more sexist than having HIStory, and MANagers.

No. It's a metaphor. Just because the metaphor for someone watching over you in a semi-malicious way works better when that someone is male doesn't make it sexist. It's the same thing as the metaphor "mother earth."

Aww, I don't know though, "Big Sibling" doesn't really have the same ring to it really. Then there's the whole link to 1984...

I never thought of it like that, but you're right to ask due to the recent shouts of racism. Yeah...What about the sexism innuendos?
