What I mean is what is the most generally applicable grad degree that could be used to obtain a good job in a variety of fields? For example, I know there are people with law degrees who aren't practicing law, but have gotten a better job based on the fact that they have a law degree. What's best, MBA, JD, MD, other?

JD is the one that gives you the most flexibility. It's long been known as the grad degree to get even if you don't plan on working in the particular field of the degree.

Defnitely not MD. Too specialized. Takes too long too.

MBA is ok, but tends to limit you to the business arena. Not quite as respected as a JD by the general public.
