Luxor. Definately luxor. it's the real bedwin place with the most monuments to visit not like Cairo which only has the pyramids of giza and is beside that a 'modern' crowded city with no OLD EGYPT bedwin feeling like luxor would give u trust me I'm an egyptian if you're not that interested in the pyramids 'in person' then you'll find that most pharaoh monuments are in luxor and aswan.

For a day. Then, definitely Cairo.
Morning - Pyramids and Camel ride 2 hours
Blue Mosque 30 minutes
Lunch - Khan el-Khalili Market 1 Hour
Afternoon-City of the Dead
Coptic Quarter/Museum 2hours
Tea Time- Cairo Marriott 1 hour
(a old palace)
National Museum 2 hour
Dinner - Nile Dinner Cruise 3 hours
- Light Show at the Pyramid (if you can fit it in)
Night Life - Belly Dancing Show 12am 2 hours
(That's when the Egyptians show up)
See the map for the best flow of traffic. You also need a car for this kind of itinerary.
Luxor is a half day trip if you buy a overnight train sleeper ticket from Cairo to Luxor at 5am. Visit the 2 Museums and 2 Temples on foot. Faluca ride and light show(buy the DVD at the National Museum). You'd still have the whole afternoon free with nothing to do. Smoke a Shisha and sip mint tea for the rest of the day waiting to get out of the city.

Cairo. The pyramids are one of the few places I've been where I know photos haven't done justice to the venue.
Throw in the craziness of the city, the various Islamic sites, and the citadel, and you got quite a lot to explore.
Luxor has Karnak, an impressive temple, plus the Valley of the Kings, but I personally found Cairo to be a lot more interesting. Luxor is pretty dependent on tourists too.

Cairo is the crowded capital with many things to do beside the Pyramids and the Egyptian museum, but if you are visiting in winter or before summer it's the best time to visit Luxor. I thought about telling you both, but you should go Luxor and later you have to see Cairo. I hope I didn't confuse you.

you have to go to giza in cairo right? I don't remember what exactly was in luxor, some of the temple complexes are a bit more to see than the great pyramids or the sphinx at giza which you can take a look but that's it, even going into the great pyramid is just a dark hallway with an empty room at the back. Valley of the kings has more writing on the walls but the outrside pyramid structures didn't hold up as well.

Cairo may be the capital of Egypt and one of many greatest towns in Africa and the Middle East and a great place to see; find more with hotelbye . On the Nile lake, Cairo is well-known for its record, preserved in the amazing medieval Islamic town and Coptic internet sites in Old Cairo. The Egyptian Museum in the hub of town is vital see, with its countless Old Egyptian artefacts since number visit to Cairo would be complete without a stop by at the Giza Pyramids, and to the nearby Saqqara Pyramid Complex. In Cairo you will see: The Pyramid of Cheops (also called the Great Pyramid or Pyramid of Khufu), the biggest pyramid of the Giza group, and their interior of slim passages could be investigated, although there is not significantly to see, except a plain tomb chamber by having an empty sarcophagus. Straight behind the Great Pyramid could be the Solar Boat Museum, which exhibits one of the ceremonial solar barques discovered in the area that's been carefully repaired to its original glory. Further south on the plateau could be the Pyramid of Chephren (also called the Pyramid of Khefre), which has an internal tunnel place that can be entered.

Definitely Luxor. There is so much more to do and see. To be honest my b/f and I were a little disappointed with the pyramids, but felt we had to see them. We did a day tour to Cairo and a two day tour to Luxor:
Karnak Temple
Valley of Kings
Valley of Queens
Hatchpsut Temple
Colossi of Memnon
Sound and Light Show (at Karnak Temple)
There is also a museum in Luxor that is meant to be very good. You can also do a balloon flight and boat trip on the Nile from there.

For a day? Talk about a whirlwind tour, why only a day?
I worked in Egypt for 5 years I only saw half of what I wanted to see.
If I had only one choice from the two then I agree with our Egyptian friend (your first answer), but I am really 'gobsmacked' by your question, it would be like me asking "I am visiting the USA for a day, should I visit Disney land or visit New York for an hour or so"??
But whatever, I hope you enjoy, you will certainly never forget it, all the Egyptians I met or worked with were the friendliest people I have ever met in any country, and I've been to a few countries!.

nicely, Luxor has extra antiquities and a team of magnificent museums. yet Aswan is large too. Cairo has the main effective museum with the mummies and Tutankhamun's mask, and the pyramids. yet by potential of ways, the pyramids are not that interesting. there is not any longer something interior, however the scale and sheer aweness is sufficient. The sphinx is cool too.
