height is not really a big issue, can be short or tall, i feel speed is more of an issue. sometimes a bigger defender may be more beneficial. and roles for defensive players are pretty much to keep the ball out of the goal doing whatever you can

Traditionally defenders are usually tall but when you look at roberto carlos u would think that height is not really a factor once you have the passion for the game and you practise hard enough it would take you far.

The two central defenders are usually bigger than the full backs.

In brief, they need to win the majority of headers in and around the penalty areas.

Whereas fullbacks, need to be good tacklers and have pace to mark their wingers.
