Well if you love Colorado and only hate your town maybe you should just change towns and not states! Now with that said I will still answer your question; Belive it or not New York state is great; Forget about the City I'm talking about what they call Upstate which is everything away from the city. The people are very friendly (you can't walk through most towns without half the people you see saying Hi to ya), the laws are pretty easy to get along with, the state agencies are great and very much there for you in anyway they can help, the countryside is absolutely beautiful, Land and homes are amazingly cheap you can buy a fairly nice home for like $30k and I have seen decent fixer uppers for like $5k, all the prices on normal household items are cheap too like food for example I can buy a dozen eggs for $.59 a whole fryer chicken for $2 Etc., the crime rate is quite low even in most of the larger cities, the weather although a bit cold is way better than you would tend to think (and probably not much colder than in Colorado), wages can tend to be a bit on the low side but things are cheap enough it really does'nt matter ( a person working at MacDonalds can afford to buy a home, try that in most states!) the counties and towns are very family oriented as well as having schools that are quite good! I lived most of my life in California and I can tell ya that New York is much nicer in many ways ! oh you may hear that Taxes are high but I can tell you I would much rather pay 15 or 20 % on a $30k home than pay even a very low 5% on a $300k equivalent home in California

If you're out in the eastern third of Colorado (sounds like you are), then why not move to the mountains? I used to live in Colorado Springs, and I don't think I would have liked living out on the prairie either, but some of the small mountain towns are great!

I live in Alaska... It is fantastic here.. The mountain go on forever, there are millions of places to go camping, the fishing here is the best in the world, the skiing is great, the economy is booming, etc... I could go on and on.. The winters are kinda long, but the summers more than make up for it.. Oh yeah, the first time you see the northern lights, you'll know this place is for you... good luck!!
