Apples to Apples.
The object of the game is to make the best match.
You have a hand full of 7 red cards (nouns). Each round, one player is the Judge and turns over a green card (adjective).
Each player except the Judge secretly plays a red card they think will be the best match for the green card. Then the Judge picks the best match, and the player who played the best red card gets to keep the green card as a way to keep score. Then the next player is Judge for the next round.
For Example:
The Judge turns over a green card: "Annoying"
People play the following red cards:
Traffic
Mice
Nuclear War
Tom Cruise
The Judge thinks it over and eventually picks Tom Cruise. The person who played Tom Cruise keeps the green card "Annoying". Everyone except the Judge then draws a new red card to bring their hand back to 7. Now it's the next players turn to be Judge.

Depending on how long you want to be hosting, here's a few game suggestions.
* Monopoly (~4 hours)
* Risk (~6 hours, if doing 100% domination)
* Twister (~30 minutes)
* Janga (~15 minutes)
* Uno (~15-30 minutes)
* Clue (~1 hour)
* Sorry (~1 hour)
* Scrabble (~2 hours)
* Life (~2 hours, more for the "younger crowd")
* Parcheesi (~1 hour)
* Trivia Pursuit (~2 hours)
* Guestures (~30 minutes)
* Taboo (~30 minutes)
* Apples to Apples (~1 hour)
* Trouble (~30 minutes)
* Topple (~30 minutes)
* Boggle (~10 minutes)
* Scatagories (~15 minutes)
* Pictionary (~2 hours)
* Win, Lose or Draw (~2 hours)
* Cranium (~1 hour)
* Battle of the Sexes (~1 hour)
* Outburst (~30 minutes)
That's about all I can think of at the moment. I've listed the approximate playtime needed to complete each game. This way you can figure out if you have time to play a particular game or not.

The best "new" game out there is QUELF - It combines all the best from Cranium and goes even further.
You can also go with the Scene It games if you have movie, TV, sports, music people this is also a great game series.
http://php.screenlifegames.com/scene_it.php
But for just rambunctious fun Quelf is the way to go!!

Boardgames are my hobby and I have tons of them. I am always asked to bring games to gatherings. I find that the ones that really work best with mixed crowds (game/nongame people) are the DVD games.
Scene it Movies is great fun. If you like rock music and are in your twenties and thirties, Riff is good.People who don't like games like these. They are best in teams.
Apples to apples is fun if you have a debating, chatty crowd.
Encore is a blast and a half if you are music lovers and don't mind singing outloud.
Hoopla is a shorter game than cranium and is less competive. That goes over well too.

Depends on how many people you're talking about. Apples to Apples, Quelf, etc. are great games if you have a table big enough for everyone to sit around. If you have more people than that, Time's Up might work (it's sort of charades-like) or "Werewolf" (aka Mafia), which is a public-domain game, rules here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Werewolf_(game). Have fun!
