I am interested in publishing articles in magazines...and by the terminology I am wondering if magazines ignore articles that are just sent to them...if they are solicited...how does a magazine even know to contact you?

They don't know to contact you. Solicited usually means that they are advertising for articles. Go to the website for the magazine you want to write for, and check out their specs.
Magazines are always looking for good writers....your articles will get much better consideration if you follow the rules.

A solicited manuscript is one the publication seeks. There may be an ad in the publication asking readers to submit their own stories. Or, if the publication knows a freelancer, the publication will ask a freelancer to write a story.

An unsolicited manuscript is one the publication has not sought. For example, you just write a story and send it in.

As you may know, the publication's mast usually tells whether the publication accepts unsolicited manuscripts. If the publication does, follow the guidelines listed. If you are required to mail your manuscript via regular mail and you want your manuscript returned, you almost always will have to provide a self-addressed envelope with the proper postage.

If you send an unsolicited manuscript to a publication that does not accept such manuscripts, the manuscript will not be read. This is the rule at most major publications, as editors don't have enough time to wade through slush in search of a gem.

sounds like you have an idea what they mean, solicited is when they ask for it and unsolicited id when you just send it to them. There are many ways they may solicite from you. You could be famous and they could ask you to write something,or you could have applied for a job or freelance writing by sending a resume and writing samples. or they could be refered to you, certainly if you're some type of expert. Or they may occassionaly have a contest or make an open invitation for people to send articles.

You can't compare a man to a woman. Each is different. But a man, and a woman, complement each other. In other words, one man and one woman (together) is one unit. They are a complementary pair.
