I live in a NYC apartment. There are two apartments in our building, a 5 person (mine) and a 3 person. Unfortunately, the building has only one cable input for us to share (it is in our room and we run a connection to theirs). Thus, there are 8 computers hooked up to the same connection.

Obviously it is slower than typical, but we've been dealing with insanely slow speeds (10 kb/s and lower). We believe this is largely due to the kids in the other apartment downloading files and playing online games. It's really becoming a pain to deal with.

Anyone have any suggestions on steps to take that don't involve starting a war with the opposing apartment?

Really the only option is to check with your provider and get a higher broadband package. You have 8 people there that can share the cost, so it shouldn't be any big deal.

That's the only option without spending major cash, i.e. $1,000+

When I was on dial-up, I would open several different sites after one loaded, so that when I finished reading or posting at the one I was on, others would have opened. There are programs that you can download that claim to speed up your connection... My firewall has told me they were virus or other malware when I tried that approach... Good luck... As others told you, it helps when I close some of the open programs, maybe... If I'm working with a picture editor, while the internet is downloading a page into my browser, it affects the computer response time, rather than the internet...

There are cable amplifiers on the market. They boost the signal strength to televisions. I would imagine they do the same thing for your PC connection.

ask them for a modem and a private connection instead of a shared one..
though it maybe of lesser speed but then it will be constant throughout..
thats the case here in india..

Try lobbying for your own private cable connection. Unfortunately, there's really nothing else you can do about it.
