I have a 1990 Miata, manual. A fricken' trooper. She's got just over 260,000 miles on her with no major work done. It has a problem in the cold mornings of always grinding between the high gears for the first 5-10 min, afterwards which it stops. She also has another problem: Sputtering and putting. Mainly in 1st and 2nd gear. She's not as fast as she used to be overall, and besides the understandable "She's old, let her go." answer(which I plan on doing soon anyway), what other suggestions are there? I did just recently put some oil in. I want to try and give her some of her life back, before she goes under...

PS. Yeah yeah, I know Miata's are referred to as 'girly' cars, but I needed a car, and I got it for free. Plus, that's the main reason I'm getting rid of it. I want to get an Impreza or Lancer personally...

try changing the transmission and put the right fluid back in and see if the grinding goes away. if not, you transmission synchronizers are worn. to solve you sputter problem, do an engine compression test and see if the compression are low.if low compression, engine is gone

try letting the car warm up for about 10 15 minutes before driving it on cold days, and for the sputtering it could be a few things, i would try replacing the spark plugs, and see if that helps any, checking the tranny fluid, do an oil change, just try some of the easy basic stuff.

First item, the transmission syncros are worn. When they warm up the clearances reduce and they work. This is tranny overhaul item.
Second item, the car is running too lean while cold. This is either the cold start injector or sensor. Local mechanic can test/replace it.
