You will need enough processor to run whatever operating system you have. If you are using the operating system the laptop came with I would say any processor that the manufacturer put in should be enough for you.

Your main consideration for online anything is going to be the speed of your internet connection.

I would echo the previous answers about the need to run a firewall, an anti-virus program, and an anti-spyware program. I would also recommend running the Firefox browser rather than Internet Explorer if the poker site supports it. It has much better controls against ads, spyware, and viruses but it doesn't support some of the Microsoft specific tweaks that some websites use.

Good luck.

Not very fast, 200+ mhz.
You don't need XP you can still get Java/Flash (what's needed for online poker) with ME...and, running only ME (which requires much less power to run quickly than XP), even a Pentium 2 with 200mhz + processor speed should be fine.

The reason you'd want an XP capable PC (about Pentium 3 800mhz, 256mb ram or better) is for compatibility with new software and advanced graphics/video production/games applications...just surfing the net, e-mail, and poker does not require much (hey, people were doing online poker back in the Pentium 2 days).

Here's one example (NOT for commercial reasons, this isn't my computer or a friends I'm not advertising, just giving an example of the kind of computer you will probably need)

A side note: one user said you need a faster computer to run ANTI VIRUS and FIREWALL applications for good security. Use AVG free anti-virus and Firewall, though, and it (unlike many other modern applications like McAfee, Norton Secuirty Suite, etc.) will NOT suck up your CPU power and make you need a faster computer.
You can still run a slower processor without compromising security.

Good luck!

well just to go to online poker, your would probably need noly about 1 GHz, but you will also need to run a firewall and antivirus softeware. if you are a patient person, you could probably get away with a 1.4 GHz Athlon or Turion, or a 1.6 Centrion or Pentium M. or for dual core, take off .2 GHz (do;t get a celeron, and don;t get a sempron processor, look for an athlon, turion, centrino, or pentium M) if you are not a patient person, you should probably add .6 GHz to those figures from before.

The amount of RAM aslo has a lot to do with speed. if it is running windows XP, then 512 MB minimum, 1 GB recommended. if it is running vista, then 1 GB minimum (i know they say 512MB but they are falt out lying to you about that) 1.5GB recommended.

'luck

You dont need very much computer power to play online poker--I play it everyday--I have quite a bit of computing power but I also have a guage that tells me how much cpu usage I'm using. Poker only uses about 4% of my cpu power.

Depends on what version of Windows you use it for too. If you don't have anything else installed... a pentium 3 should easily be able to handle it.

Just be careful not to install anything else, nor any "ad supported" software. You don't want to get it infected with adware or spyware.
