Remember kids like the simple things.
Mine always liked things like neat little pencils, sharpener, maybe a pack of gum, a few peices of candy, bubbles are always good, fake tattoos (kids love 'em), party blowers (parents hate 'em lol), a small box of crayons, or small markers, a little note pad of their very own.
Just some ideas. Good luck. (I am sure anything you decide will be just fine!)

It's not rude if the parent keeps asking or insists on "what 'Ryan' likes?". From the scruples teaching, you did fine in answering and keep doing that. First time they ask say that's ok he has enough toys or whatever. Then if they ask again, say well right now he is into this and you can add that if he is friends with the child of the parent that is asking then you can include their child and say, "well the last time they were here they were into Transformers, or whatever they were into". It's not rude to tell them, they asked. If they ask with good body language and they insist, then tell them. It's more frustrating for them if you don't answer, or they end up buying something anyway and it may not be something that your child likes, they never play with it, then that could make the parent friend feel bad or that they wasted their money, so tell them. The flip side is if you have a birthday party and say no gifts, then they should respect that.

I have a neice who just had a b-day party. We got them foam sun-visors from the craft store (real inexpensive-about $1 a piece) and then we got some packages of foam stickers so they could make their own hats. The girls loved them because they got to make them themselves. Their are other things the stickers go on like sandals. Just look around the craft store. You can just put the hats etc in the bag with the stickers left in the packages so they can do something at home-Happy Birthday to the Birthday girl good luck-Mellie

If you have a Dollar Tree in your area, they are great about having things like that. If you have a lot of music on your computer you could burn them a cd with your daughter's favorite songs on it. Blank cds don't cost too much.
