One way is to use a micrometer to measure thickness.

Assuming that you have no micrometer, but a regular ruler, let's say you are finding the thickness of a sheet of paper. First you find the area of one side. A sheet of paper is actually a "cubic" shaper since it has a length, width and height (i.e., the thickness). Now, you need to find out the volume in one of several ways. One would be by volume displacement - not using water because it soaks up water, so you'd have to use a container filled with gas and measure the volume of gas it displaces. Then, using the volume formula (l * w * h) and solving for h, youd find the thickness. Of coruse, this requires being able to know the area.
