I know you take tests and file papers if eligible...

But how hard are the ASE tests? Does anyone know of "rocks" [read: mentally inept persons] that were able to pass the tests?

Please explain the ASE certification, like what to expect, level of difficulty et cetera...

Thanks, Tim (considering persuing ASE certification)

It's a weird test. Some questions are general, others - related to a particular brand, usually - gm. Some questions my cat can answer, others involve somewhat tricky logic above and beyond college level.
I know quite dumb people who are certified... Last time I took two tests a couple of years ago, and got 98% and 100%. But I have MSME. You have nothing to loose other than a few bucks. They have sample questions on their site - try them.

Being a master ASE Tech, I have taken the tests several times... I do not believe that they are extremely difficult, but I do believe that preparation is needed. I also feel that the certification can be abused a little...I have seen some morons out there that don't know a ratchet from a wrench have some ASE's, and screw some stuff up. Unfortunately, this is how we are paid, so go for the Certs, and good luck

if you know how the vehicles operate,it not that hard. just grab a book and memorize the terms or words they use because in real world,we don"t talk like the one that make the tests. ASE require an applicant to work at a facility for a few years to gain experience in order to take a test. the hardest test is L1(advance level specialist). this is for anyone want to be a smog check technicians and their pay check get fatter. if you fail the test, the trick is try to memorize the questions and find the answers. i took the easy one first which is electric and then engine performance. it takes me a few trial before i pass them(i was nervous). TRY TO RELAX DURING THE TEST. i saw severals applicants got nervous and flunk the tests. after i have my smog check license, my paycheck hit the 6 figures

WAIT UNTIL YOU ARE IN A SHOP TO TAKE THE TESTS. MOST DEALERSHIPS AND PRIVATE SHOPS APPRECIATE ASE CERTIFICATION BUT DONT ACTUALLY PAY MORE FOR THEM. ALSO, MOST SHOPS WILL PAY FOR THE TESTS IF YOU ARE EMPLOYED THERE.
START OFF TAKING ENGINE AND ELECTRICAL. THEY ARE FAIRLY EASY
L1 AND A/C MAY BE DIFFICULT IF YOU DO NOT HAVE FIELD EXPERIENCE [A/C ASKS ABOUT GAUGE READINGS]

ASE certification is way too easy to get , go get into an apprentice program - it will be taken a lot more seriously by future employers
