The little lever that you push up or down to either keep water in the tub or drain it, has stopped working. We took the faceplate off and can see that the little circle that the cotter pin goes into has broken. On ours, which is a little older, this whole piece that the cotter pin goes through seems to be part of the paceplate. When I check online for replacements, the faceplate is just the metal cover. I don't need the whole complete drain mechanism. Does this sound like something we can fix ourselves?

Take out everything connected to the faceplate by taking off the fastening screw and pulling it all up. The piece inside is typically a zinc casting and is subject to wear and corrosion so parts breaking off are common. When you pull it out you should have everything right down to the brass plug that is on the bottom of a brass linkage. Bring all of that with you to a place like Home Depot or Lowes. A replacement kit from Home Depot is about $20 and doesn't take very long to install (kit probably also has some more parts you don't need). Just drop the weight and linkage down into the hole and put on the screw. Then try putting water in the tub and see if the stopper is keeping the water in. If not pull it out and turn the length-adjusting nut to shorten or lengthen the linkage until it works right.

Repair Bathtub Drain

The top part you removed is the handle control. To that is attached a long chain or cord that pulls up and down a brass piece about 1 inch in diameter to close off the drain. This brass piece is located way down in the bottom towards the tub and it normally has a chain or cord hooked to that control you removed.

Take a coat hanger and make about a 1/2 inch 90 degree hook on it and retrieve that brass piece and the control chain or cord that is way down in there. Then reconnect the chain to proper length or replace the cord, which ever was used. You can use an ordinary piece of copper wire if its a chain to repair it or use an ordinary strong cord to replace a rotted cord.

Oh yeah, you can do it yourself. If the rest of the lever has fallen down the pipe, you should be able to retrieve it with some fishing line and a hook.
