Hi everyone. I have and old bed frame but a new mattress. The mattress sits on wooden planks parallel one to the other. These are also as old as the bed frame. Ive had it for almost 20 years. It squeaks a lot and i was wondering what i could do about it.. Thank u!

Dont have a box spring, the mattress, as i said, sits on the planks. I have a back problem and its better to sleep on a 'stiff' bed..

You can apply some wax to the crossways boards if they are squeaking, as it will lubricate them. If it's the headboard, footboard, and siderails then you'll probably have to disassemble them and reglue any joints that are moving.

Buy a good box spring and then place plywood between the box spring and mattress. I had a 4 x 8 sheet of 5/8" plywood cut to fit the area. It stiffened up the mattress and improved sleeping and no sore backs.

Without a box spring, the mattress may not be supported well enough with just the boards across the frame. I would cut a piece of half inch thick plywood and lay it over the boards to create a supporting platform.

Fasten a piece of 3/4" plywood to existing planks. Make sure planks and plywood are straight (no big gaps between them). First use caulking gun with a tube of construction adhesive, or just regular wood glue, to bond plywood to planks. Second, fasten plywood to planks using 1" drywall screws. Wipe off any excess glue and you are done.

Screw (not nail!) several boards parallel to the ones making up the base currently. This will keep them from moving around and against each other, hopefully eliminating the squeaking.

Get a new box spring - that goes between the matress and the frame.

Take the foam like insulation that is used to wrap around pipes... take that (it splits in half) and position that around the bed frame. This foam is also great for child proofing things around your home. :) Hope it/something works!
