They can tell you how far along you are but chances that they can tell you if you are having a boy or a girl are SLIM at 12weeks. GOOD LUCK & CONGRATS!

well they can;t be ENTIRELY accurate...because they are just able to LOOK at a picture of the baby through soundwaves. they can't actually measure and weigh the actual baby, seeing how it is inside of you ;) they are a really good, somewhat close estimation. so if the baby's size/weight is a little off from what you think it should be they tell you not to worry. they only worry if it's WAY off. i've known ladies that had an ultrasound shortly before giving birth freaking out because their estimated weight was like over 8 lbs...but their babies ended up a little over 7 lbs! :) don't worry...if the baby seems small, do know things change SO rapidly at your gestation

My doc said that they are MOST accurate for telling the due date (growth rate) of the baby before 12 weeks, but that for telling gender not until around 20 weeks.
As for size, they are very accurate at any time for measuring size.

In the first 12 weeks you usualy just want to hear the heart beat and if you cant hear it sometimes you can see the rise and fall of the chest with the ultra sound thats all its realy for. If you mean as far as telling the sex it can only be accurate after week 16

They are very accurate and can determine how many babies you are having immediately. I found out at 6 weeks that I was having twins. The machine measures the fetus and gives the tech the calculations to determine size.

They take measurements from static images of the baby and can tell if they are on track for their age or not. There are standards for normal and abnormal size, and the ultrasound tech is not going to tell you ANYTHING - they can't. Your OB/gyn or perinatologist will let you know if you baby is right on track.
If you had an ultrasound and were not given any information, you should call your OB's office and ask for the details. You have to be your own healthcare advocate, nobody else is going to do it for you.

I don't think they are accurate for baby's sex until 20 weeks.
Determination of gestational age and assessment of fetal size.
Fetal body measurements reflect the gestational age of the fetus. This is particularly true in early gestation. In patients with uncertain last menstrual periods, such measurements must be made as early as possible in pregnancy to arrive at a correct dating for the patient. See FAQ. In the latter part of pregnancy measuring body parameters will allow assessment of the size and growth of the fetus and will greatly assist in the diagnosis and management of intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR).

Well they are good on determining how big the baby is if you aren't sure. But that's why they wait until 20 weeks to do the good one.Just to make sure everything is developing.
