As a bank consultant, I have seen many cases of this type of fraud. Bank employees are becoming increasingly more aware of these types of checks and are either placing extended holds on the checks when they are deposited, or are sending them for collection first. Unfortunately, I have also seen incidents where the customer was scammed before finding out the check was ficticious and was forced to borrow money to repay the loss.
If you do a web search for "Canadian Lottery Scam" you will find a wealth of information. Below is just one of many:
http://www.crimes-of-persuasion.com/Crimes/Telemarketing/Outbound/Major/lotteries.htm
Additionally, please refer to web address below for additional frauds. The OCC is the Office of the Comptroller of Currency the arm of government that oversees national banks.
The FTC has valuable information on the prevention of ID theft, which you should also read up on. The address is www.ftc.gov
I hope this helps. Your bank should also be able to give guidance. Since you were the potential victim, they may want to consider filing a SAR (Suspicious Activity Report).

Discontinue communication. Why on earth would they send you a check then expect you to send them money for a prize? That's absurd. The check is no good. They had their chance. Theyr'e a scam. Simply stop talking to them.

Just ignore them you never have to pay for a prize it is a racket and they will try to get money out of you. You could report them for mail fraud as well:http://www.usps.com/postalinspectors/fraud/MailFraudComplaint.htm , with the hope they will be stopped before they scam anyone else. Good Luck!

Drop it like a hot potato! Do not pursue this any further. And DO NOT send them any money!! This is a big fat scam, and if you send them any money you will never see/hear from them or your money again.
