Metals can't form crystalline structures in their elemental form.
Dues to the high packing and electron packing, electron density of metals (which make metals, by the way) the atoms are too close to each other to form a crystalline matix.
Also, The amount of energy that would be required to separate the atoms to a distance that would allow them to form a crystalline structure would have to "destroy" the dense electron packing and surface structure characteristic of the metal.
To be opaque - it would have to be crystalline.

Some of the people above seem to labour under the illusion taht crystalline materials are transparent and non-crystalline ones are opaque.
Contrary to popular belief, metals always exist in the solid form as crystals. Crystals don't always have t be glassy. And again, glass which is transparent, is not a crystalline material at all. In fact glassy (or amorphous) materials are the opposite of crystalline materials.
Metals are opaque because their crystal structure and packing makes them opaque. There are transparent crystals too. Ice and diamonds are just two examples.

Metals are not opaque. They are shiny. They reflect light. Opaque means that light can go through them, although you do not see through them. Opaque is like a bathroom window that lets in some light. You can not see throu any metal, and they do not let light through.

One of the answers above confused "opaque" and "translucent".
Also, metals tend to be dense, and it's hard to think of anything that's simultaneously dense, non-crystalline, and translucent or transparent.
